Bank ATM Guide

Banking in Shimane

The biggest bank in Shimane is the Sanin Goudo Bank, or Gougin (Little Grey Rabbit), which has more branches and ATMs than any other.  Your bank account will be used primarily for automatic bill payments and direct deposit of your salary.  Outside of the Sanin Region (Shimane and Tottori), finding a bank machine with access to your account can be difficult.  Post office accounts are much more convenient in this regard, with branches all across the country.  Plus, you can send money home cheaply and easily from post office branches (whether you have a post office account or not): just say “kokusai yubin kawase, onegaishimasu” (国際郵便為替をお願いします).

Typical banking hours are from 9am-3pm weekdays, 9am-12pm on Saturdays, closed on Sundays and holidays.  Japanese ATMs are not open 24 hours a day.  Most ATMs are open from 9am to 7pm weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends and holidays.  The following instructions are assuming Sanin Godo Bank’s ATMs:
